The wealth of wisdom, the graceful smiling artist, will no longer walk with us. At the age of twenty she married Vinay Kant Nagar and traveled with him as his work took him all over India and abroad starting with an unforgettable sojourn in 1969 to the historic town of Fredericton in Canada. In many ways, her travels molded her strength of character and honed her broader perspectives in life, a virtue that rubbed off any one lucky enough to spend even a brief while with her. When Vinay Kant rose in his career to assume the mantle of the first civilian surveyor generalship of independent India in 1992, Shama effortlessly slipped into the role of the first lady of the organization, a responsibility that she discharged with memorable distinction. They were then based in her beloved Dehradun.Vinay Kant and Shama were happily married for over twenty-nine years and were blessed with two beautiful children – a daughter and a son.She grew up loving music, dance, theater and participating in sports. She had the dance moves be it classical Bharatanatyam or the Waltz and Cha-Cha. Her eyes sparkled with joy whenever she performed or saw performances on stage. She loved to travel, enjoyed fine dining and was always making friends along the way. She mastered Sudoku and her day would not begin without a game of devilish Sudoku and a cup of hot steaming tea.Above all, she loved spending time with her family and was incredibly proud of her children, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren. Her family most treasures the memories spent around the dinner table enjoying each other’s company and her delicious cooked meals. Her’s was a life truly worth celebrating. Although she will be deeply missed, she leaves behind a priceless collection of memories that her loved ones will forever cherish.
