Norman Eugene Smith's Obituary
Norman Eugene Smith, born November 17, 1936, in Iowa, to Larro and Ferne Smith, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother Andrew Smith, his sisters Norma Schott and Neta Smith, his beloved wife of 44 years, Garee Lee Smith, and later, Barbara, with whom he shared many meaningful years.
Norm was born and raised on a farm in Iowa before the family relocated to California. He attended Castlemont High School in Oakland and went on to serve proudly in the U.S. Army as a Green Beret with the 77th Airborne. He carried that honor with pride throughout his life.
An accomplished archer, Norm once held the title of California State Champion. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of the Foothill Sportsman Club of San Leandro.
He worked for the Carnation Company for many years, overseeing operations and efficiency. Later, he became a licensed contractor and built his own business, which he operated until his retirement.
For almost 50 years, he called Castro Valley home. He and his wife Garee raised their daughters there. Norm grew abundant gardens filled with flowers and vegetables, tended an orchard, and raised a flock of pigeons for 40 years. Norm always enjoyed talking to his neighbors and spending time with his good friends as they were a big part of his life.
He leaves behind his devoted dog, Blondie, who stayed faithfully by his side in his final years, to the care of his family.
He is survived by his daughters, Kristal Hartman (Michael) of California, and Sharice Johnson (Michael) of Oregon. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Cody Wilson, Dylan and Cole Hartman, and Gavin, Emmi, and Liesel Johnson. He is survived as well by his devoted caregiver, Bessa, and his and Garee’s extended families.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at 12:00 noon at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, California. A luncheon will follow in Castro Valley (to be announced at the service). All who knew and loved him are welcome to join in remembering his life.
