She was our God Mother at our wedding on Sept 17,1995. We will miss her so much. She such a beautiful lady inside and out. Every time we meet although seldom, i always remember her beauty , the way she dress and look so elegant no matter what the occasion maybe. She’s such a soft hearted person that she need not to say anything ,but you will feel in your heart her kindness when she look at you.
Now she will be in heaven with her husband my Ninong, Ninang Norma,now that you’ve left our world happy and content. I thank your daughter Mareng Tess and her family in taking good care of you. My Mareng Tess and Pareng Arce took good care of you everyday they come to your place to feed you and make sure you’re ok. Although i havent met the rest of Mareng Tess siblings, they did the same to care and love you.
This is not goodbye my dear Ninang, rest now and you will be with our God and our Lord Jesus Christ in heaven. I will miiss you so much , but you will always be in my heart.

These are the memories I have of my mother, Norma Banzon:

She was meticulous in her appearance. When I was a kid growing up in the Phillippines, I would watch her when she was getting ready for a party or family event. She paid special care to the way she looked, head to toe, selecting the nicest jewelry to accessorize her outfit.

She was strong-willed. She was determined that her children would do well in life so, even though she and my father didn’t have a lot of money, they made sure that all three of us got a good education. She might not have verbalized it, but I know my mother wanted us to be successful and happy, and her foresight and advice allowed us to achieve that.

She was devoted to her family. She helped to physically take care of my grandmother, who was in bed and paralyzed for many years. And she balanced that with her role as a young mom and wife.

She was deeply religious. That was something she instilled in us, going to Sunday Mass and observing all the Catholic rites. While living at Dyer St. she would attend Mass almost every day. When we were young we had to pray the rosary each day in October during the Month of the Holy Rosary – although it seemed like torture for us at the time!

She liked to sing. Even toward the end of her life, she responded to music and would sing her favorite gospel song, In His Time. Music reached her even when other things couldn’t.

She was an excellent cook. And she made a killer hegado (a beef dish from her native Phillippines) that I have yet to duplicate.

She was a proud woman. One lesson that she always imparted to me was to never live beyond your means. Being indebted to someone was something to be avoided, but to be generous toward others was always to be praised.

Nanay, I will forever remember your generosity and am so grateful for everything that you did for us when we were young. Later on, you came to visit me and my own family every summer, every year, and we are who we are because of you. You will always be loved and cherished.
