A native of the tiny hamlet of Addison NY (pop. 1200), “Grammarie” worked for Corning Glass before heading west to Oakland in 1948, eventually calling Hayward home in 1958. She never regretted leaving the harsh NY winters! During her years in Hayward, she was an energetic member of St Bede’s Catholic Church where she sang in the women’s and mixed choirs and also served as an organist. She was active in the parish Women’s Club, serving in various officer capacities and running the annual festival food concession. Upon her marriage to Frank Barone in 1979, she moved to Richmond where she continued her choir and organist services at St David’s of Wales. A long time member of the California Catholic Ladies Aid Society, Marie served two years as the organization’s president. Marie worked as a clerical assistant and caterer for many years. In addition to music, her hobbies included cooking, doll crafting, ceramics and sewing. Upon retirement, she and Frank became avid adventurers, traversing the country many times in their camper and visiting friends along the way. Marie was also a diehard Giants and A’s fan but she would always root for her beloved Yankees in a local matchup. After Frank’s passing in 1995, Marie remained in Richmond until 2004 when she relocated to the Tri-Valley area. After several years at Heritage Estates, she moved to Sunol Creek Memory Care in 2014. “Grammarie” leaves a legacy of teaching and tradition, including music, cooking and craftwork as well as her over the top holiday decorating and family feasts. She will be forever missed by her many friends and loved ones.
