Today at Encinal we honored Jordan by having a few teachers share their thoughts, we had a moment of silence, and a poem was read that I wrote for him. Here is that poem: His early steps were clumsy- Toddler feet, turned in, catching the rug, Shoes with Velcro straps, maybe soles That sparked, in Spiderman colors. Then the first day of school, laces floppy, Nervous, curled toes, not wanting to leave the house, But in time running on the playground, Racing into the classroom, on eager tip-toes, With hand raised, answer set, ready to hear, His name called and acclaimed-good job son! And then just a few years ago, his last walk at Jetland- From the back breezeway, across the field, Up onto the platform for a handshake and the crowd?s cheers- Jordan Flores, Graduating Class of 2011? And then he learned to march for all of us, Booted, straight-backed, eyes forward, Ready to swap salutes, A soldier, our soldier, so proud, so accomplished. But not all warriors walk home, Some must be carried, then held aloft so we can see, And feel the weight of the loss, The erased days, the roads not taken. Now it is we who must walk for him, for Jordan, With our heads raised, our eyes sharp, our hearts drumming, Our steps strengthened by his voice in our ears, Saying we?ll be okay, we?ll get through this, march on, March on, march on. -Gene Kahane, Encinal Teacher
