Gloria Canda Villaruz, 84, of Placer, Surigao del Norte, Philippines, passed peacefully on April 9, 2014 in Walnut Creek, California.Visitation will be held at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, California on Saturday, April 19, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.A funeral service will be held at the same venue on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at 3:00 pm.Gloria or “Nonie” as she was fondly called by family and friends was born to Buenaventura and Francisca Canda on July 16, 1929. She earned a degree in Education and taught Grade 2 at Placer Central Elementary School for many years. After her retirement from teaching she joined her husband, Jesse, in the ownership and operation of the Villaruz Shell Station in Placer.Nonie loved growing orchids, gardening, dancing and entertaining people.Survivors include her two daughters, Gina (Edgar A.) Licup of Danville, CA, and Giselle ( Michael L.) Adams of Pleasanton, CA; son Dr. Jeric Villaruz of Santa Cruz, CA; and three grandchildren Jessica Licup, Gavin Adams and Morgan Adams.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1060 La Avenida St., Mountain View, CA 94043, Tel. 1(650) 952-8111, www.alz.org/NorCal.
