George Martin Hewitt February 3, 1941 – May 31, 2019George Martin Hewitt, 78, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 31, 2019 in Fremont, CA surrounded by his wife, daughter, brothers, and family friends. He was a resident of Newark, CA for 50 years.George was born in San Diego, CA on February 3, 1941 to Ted & Dorothy Hewitt. He was the oldest of 9 children. George graduated from Sunnyvale High School in 1958 and from San Jose State University in 1962 with a degree in political science. George attended Hastings College for one year and then returned to San Jose State and earned a master’s degree in public administration in 1965. George interned with Santa Clara County Social Services while getting his master’s.George started working for Alameda County in May 1965 as the assistant business manager for the Alameda County Welfare Department. It was there that he met his future wife. George Hewitt married Carol Bockum on February 5, 1966 in San Leandro, CA. They remained married until his passing.George & Carol lived in San Leandro from 1966 to 1969. They moved to Newark, CA in May 1969. They adopted their first born child, Kenny (June 29, 1969), in September 1969. Carol then gave birth to a daughter, Amy, on December 29, 1970, and another daughter, Emily, on September 29, 1974.George worked for Alameda County for 33 years, retiring in August 1998. During his career he was Deputy Director of the County Social Services Department, the Probation Department and the County Budget Department before retiring as Public Guardian-Conservator for Social Services. In his retirement years, George was a writer for Dodgers Dugout a newspaper for the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league A team in Bakersfield. He & his son made many Father-Son trips to cover the games. George was also an avid reader (reading a book a day), listener of music (especially show tunes), player of bridge (playing every week and teaching it at the Newark Senior Center), manager of his daughter’s fantasy football teams, and the #1 fan/follower of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Rams, Boston Celtics, and Dallas Stars. George is survived by his wife, Carol Hewitt of Newark. Daughter, Amy Hewitt, of Fremont. Seven siblings, Robert Hewitt (San Mateo), John Hewitt (Reno), Joyce Card (Placerville), Irene Hewitt (Redwood City), Richard Hewitt (San Jose), David Hewitt (Sunnyvale), and Carolyn Hewitt (Tracy). Granddaughter, Tiffani Ramirez (Brentwood), Grandson, David Ramirez (Antioch), and Great Granddaugher, Mila Mitchell (Brentwood). George is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and family friends. George was preceded in death by his Son, Parents, and Sister.George’s services will be held on Thursday, June 13th at 10:00am at:Chapel of the Chimes 32992 Mission Blvd Hayward, CA 94544
