My fondest memory of Lola was when she married my brother Joe in May 1958. She and my brother decided to buy my sisters and I matching dresses to wear to their wedding. I think it was more Lola’s idea. I was 10, my sister Lupe was 12 and sister Rita was 14. All I remember was the dresses were so pretty. I can still vividly see the dress. It was pink with light purple flower velvet appliqués. When I tried it on I immediately started twirling and dancing around. I felt like a princess. I could hardly wait for the day of the wedding so I could show it off and wear it all day long.
My second fondest memory was a short time after Lola and Joe got married they rented a small apartment which I believe was off East 14th Street in Hayward. They invited my sisters and I to spend a weekend with them. I was so excited because we never went anywhere especially without mom and dad. It was so fun. One night I remember we were all sitting around the kitchen table talking and laughing. Lola had a small plug-in radio on when the popular song “Whatever Lola Wants Lola Gets” came on. We all began singing along to the song, laughing and teasing my brother about the lyrics. It was a fun weekend.
Condolences to all the family and Bless you Lola may you RIP 🙏
