Gussy was my mother’s first cousin and she and I enjoyed being part of the big Vargas family whose roots were focused in the Warm Springs area of Fremont. Gussy was always such a sweet and positive person in my memories of her. Here is a recipe that she gave me at my wedding shower in 1965. GUSSY’S AMBROSIA SALAD Mix one cup each of shredded coconut, miniature marshmellows, sliced mandarin oranges with 1/2 cup walnuts, 1 small can tidbit pineapple and 1/2 pint whipping cream. Susan Vargas Murphy daughter of her cousin Isabel Maciel Vargas
Gussie was not only my father’s first cousin but she was my Confirmation Godmother. She lived once upon a time in a house my father built with her husband. It was the same house that her sister Lorraine and her little family lived. Linda Carol and Sandra Jean used to call me Sissy when they were small. I’m sorry to hear of her passing. May she Rest In Peace.
Thanks Sissy! I saw a number of cards you sent to Dede (that’s what I called my Aunt Gussy). She would always show them to me. Dede was in good spirits and still talking and smiling the night before she passed. I didn’t remember that about the house, and I’ll pass that info on to my sister. Thanks again for your condolences.
Oh yes Susan–the “Ambrosia Salad!”–I remember it well!
