I've known Al less than 2 years. I met him in October 2013 on my way back to Moloka'i after attending my nephew's Celebration of Life. He was on his way to Kauai for his brother's memorial, and we shared a connecting flight from Oakland, CA to Maui. I noticed Al struggling with the Hawaiian Airlines' "check-in" kiosk. I went over to help him out, got his boarding pass, and pointed him to the correct line to check-in his ice chest and fishing pole.
I waited for him, so he can follow me to the TSA screening. He offered to buy me coffee after TSA. I’m a very private and guarded person, so I don’t know why I started sharing stories with Al. Actually, I blame him – he started it. He spoke about growing up in Kauai, joining the Army, his lovely family, the brother he lost, the daughter he lost, etc. Somehow, very untypical of me, it felt right to share my story and therapeutic. We talked until we boarded and talked in Maui while waiting for our next flights. We talked like friends who haven’t seen each other in years.
We kept in touch via calls and texts. I promised to visit him on my next trip to California. Sadly, he left us for a better place before I could keep that promise. Yes, it was a short friendship, but it will be a friendship I will value and hold dear for the rest of my life. "Fair winds and following seas" my friend…may you rest eternally in God’s hands.
