Alex Jarin's Obituary
Alex Tentando Jarin, at the age of 72, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2023, surrounded by his family and friends in San Leandro, California due to complications from pneumonia.
Alex was born the eldest of 7 children to Leonardo and Florencia Jarin in Tanay, Rizal, Philippines on January 14, 1951. Being a vibrant, adventurous, and inventive individual, he pursued many entrepreneurial and mechanical professions in his early 20s and eventually migrated to the United States in 1980 with his sisters, Ermelisa “Baby” and Leonora “Nini” to be together again with the rest of the family who migrated prior.
Some special highlights of his life included his younger years when had established a beautiful friendship with a brotherhood he and his friends founded called “Skylarks” and remained close friends until this day fondly calling each other “Igan” (short for “Kaibigan”).
He indirectly shared with his friends and siblings his ultimate dream which was to marry a woman in the medical field. Fortunately, his dream came true when he met Estela in 1980 and happily married her on January 15, 1984.
He had a fascination for science and engineering, and applied his skills toward building maintenance working for Holy Names College and eventually established his primary career as a Stationary Engineer for Alameda County and retired in 2012.
In his late 30s, he contracted nasopharyngeal cancer and was told he was given only 6 months to live based on the condition. However, after 6 months of radiation treatment, the tumor successfully was removed, and he went into remission. The same form of cancer returned in 2005. He received radiation implants from the University of California San Francisco and was successfully treated back into remission.
From this experience, he wanted to live a full life, be grateful to The Lord, and be loving and caring for others.
He enjoyed being physically active and had a passion for tennis, music, traveling, gardening, and being the best Lolo (grandfather) to his one and only Apo, Aurora, as well as other children whom he lovingly considered his Apo over the years from other nieces and nephews.
He was part of many groups, as he loved being social and helping others. He was a member of a BC Radio group called Biyak 3-0 Radio Association in the early 1990s, a long-time member of the Tanay Club in America (TCIA), a member of the Philippine Medical Society of Northern California (PMSCN), and a devout and competitive yet fun member of the Tanay San Leandro California Tennis Club. He has shared how much he enjoys serving others through these groups and cherishes the friendships he’s formed with them.
He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Charles “Jojo” and Davina “Neddie”, and is survived by his wife, Estela, his children Jeff and Quinallison; his granddaughter Aurora; his siblings Magdalena “Girlie”, Jet “Baby”, Leonora “Nini” and Bernard “Boyet”; and his nephews, nieces, cousins, other family and friends who loved him dearly.
His bright smile, cheerful attitude, unselfishness, and generosity will surely and definitely be missed by so many.
