Yue Ming Zhang's Obituary
Zhang Yue Ming passed away in the morning of 3March2017 in Fremont, CA, she was 98 years old by the American standard but was 100 years old by Chinese reckoning. She was born on 12April1918 to Xu Zhi Rong and Zhang De Yi, the oldest of three children. The years and places she lived in were both blessed and cursed with, as the Chinese say, interesting times. • However she had, for lack of a better term, a “take charge” attitude that served her well. She was not always effusive in her warmth but inside was a kind and generous spirit. I can certainly recall her impeccable dress sense and Shanghai Woman style, which she somehow maintained even during the turbulent days of the cultural revolution. She was crafty yet honest, timid yet brave to recklessness, and traditional yet throughly Western—in a sense, a perfect reflection of the up and down century that she lived in. She married her soul mate Zhao Yan in 1948 in Shanghai and mourned him deeply when he passed away in 2004. She must be happy now to be finally reunited with him. She is survived by her son Zhao Long Geng and his wife Wu Bi Fen and their two children, Zhao Cong Zhi and Zhao Ling Zhi. Her family was her pride and joy and her spirit will live on though them. She will be missed but her family will take comfort in a long life well lived and the gentlest of all possible passings.
