Vernell Fowler's Obituary
Obituary
Our beloved Vernell Fowler passed away suddenly on February 2, 2022, at the age of 89. She was born in Marlin, Texas to David and Syrilda Allen on May 1, 1932. She met the love of her life, Waverly Lindsey Fowler, in Austin, Texas, and they married in 1956. With the support of their family, they relocated to Oakland, California in 1958 where they enjoyed over 50 years of marriage and raised their daughter Lola Faye Fowler.
Vernell dedicated her life to making a home for her family and giving back to her community. She loved cooking and gardening and always said “As long as I can get my hands in the dirt, I’ll be okay.” She grew collard greens, tomatoes, and all types of peppers. She freely shared her bounty with her neighbors and would frequently cook for the people in her neighborhood. Known affectionately, as the cool aunt, Vernell loved spending her summers in Texas with her family. She also enjoyed engaging them in long conversations through vivid storytelling. If anyone wanted to know what was going on in the family, Vernell was always thrilled to spill the tea.
She was truly a remarkable woman who valued her independence and believed in being prepared by saving and living frugally. To know her was to love her as she was unapologetically herself.
Vernell is survived by her grandson, Christopher McFarland and five siblings Josephine Jackson, May Williams, Donald Ray Allen, Elzadie Allen and Milford Allen.
Vernell was preceded in death by her husband Waverly Fowler, daughter Lola Faye Berryman and siblings Oscar Hunter, David Allen, Albert Allen, Booker T. Allen, Odessa Chapman, and Berthine Warren.
A service to celebrate her life will be on Monday, February 28th, 2022, at 12:00 pm at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Hayward, California.
