In memory of Tamerlane "TJ" Vuong Sanchez Jr.
January 17, 1987 - September 13, 2025
Tamerlane Vuong Sanchez Jr., better known as TJ, born January 17, 1987, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Fremont, CA, on September 13, 2025, at the age of 38. TJ was very proud of his Vietnamese and Filipino heritage. He could light up any room with his infectious smile and bold fashion statements, always reminding those around him that "We're young, we're hip, we're fun!"
TJ is survived by his loving family: his mother, Thuy Sanchez; his father, Tamerlane Sanchez; his sister, Christine Varella; his brother-in-law, Nathanael Varella; his grandmother, Phong Sanchez; and his dog, Kylo. He will forever be remembered as Tutu the best guncle in the world by his niece, Stevie Varella. He is also the heart of his chosen family, who referred to their safe space as GARC, Gay Asian Rescue Center, because it always welcomed their community.
TJ was an inspiration within the LGBTQ community. From sharing his story on National Coming Out Day to over a decade of leadership in programs like AQU25A, raMEN, and Project 333. He served on the GAPA board, which advocated for queer Asians, and was honored as a White House Youth Ambassador in 2010.
TJ was known for his outgoing personality, brutal honesty, and his ability to make friends amongst his many travels. Whether it be leading a Zumba class or riding his bike, he lived an active lifestyle, because he had a passion for food, especially donuts and baguettes.
TJ's zest for life has taught us all not to snooze and miss the moment. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul find eternal peace.
There will be Hours of Reflection and Viewing held on Monday September 29 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, CA, followed by A Night of Tributes, where we will share memories from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Celebration of Life and Cremation will follow on Tuesday September 30 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the same location.
