The Reverend Dr. Roy Irvin Priem's Obituary
The Reverend Dr. Roy Irvin Priem died March 1, 2018 in Union City, California.Rev. Priem was born June 26, 1930 in Iowa, to Irvin H. and Estle (Nelson) Priem, who where farmers. He and his wife of 51 years, Ruth Evelyn (Fessler) Priem moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1992, following his retirement from ministry in the United Church of Christ. He later relocated to the Masonic Home of California in Union City and attended the First Presbyterian Church of Newark.Dr. Priem had a love for education and urged others to purse life-long learning. After graduating from Lyle (MN) High School, Rev. Priem left farming to attend Westmar College (IA), Evangelical Theological Seminary (IL), and Hartford Seminary (CT). He earned three master’s degrees and a Th.D. Later in life, he completed studies in Nursing Home Administration at The Ohio State University and maintained his license until retirement from pastoral ministry. Ordained to Christian Ministry in 1955, he served as pastor of churches in Minnesota, Connecticut, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Missouri.Dr. and Mrs. Priem relied on their faith in God to lead them and guide them throughout their lives. They especially loved the educational component of travel. The first major family trip was to the Holy Land to visit the places where Jesus walked. Other trips took them to China, Greece, Europe, Scandinavia and most of the states of the U.S.While living in Cleveland, Dr. Priem joined the Masons and Scottish Rite. He was chaplain for Al Sirat. He also joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and served as District Captain. He loved sailing on Lake Erie and Lake Tahoe with his family.He is survived by children, the Rev. Cynthia A. Priem of Fryeburg, ME and Mr. Curtis R. Priem and his wife Cindi of Castro Valley, CA; two grandsons, Gabriel and Daniel, and two step-granddaughters, Jennifer and Heather.Visitation will take place at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Garrett Yamada will officiate at the funeral service at 3:30 and the Masonic service will follow immediately thereafter on Sunday, March 4, 2018. All will occur at the Siminoff Chapel of the Masonic Home of California, 34400 Mission Blvd., Union City, CA.
