Sterling Murchison's Obituary
Sterling Murchison passed away on April 15, 2013 at his home in San Leandro, Ca. at the age of 85 after a long battle with cancer.Sterling was born to Donald and Mary Murchison of San Leandro, California. Both of his parents were originally from Scotland but met here in California. Sterling was the youngest of 7 children, and the last to pass away. He was raised in a rich Scottish tradition, and spent his early years enjoying the frequent large family gatherings and listening to the sound of Scottish bagpipes played by his father. Sterling himself was an accomplished musician playing the violin. He performed at the 1939 World's Fair in San Francisco and also at the Hollywood Bowl. As a young man, Sterling work at various jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area until World War II started. He then joined the Merchant Marines and spent 5 years in the Pacific. He later joined the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge in 1952. After serving in the military, Sterling became known for his culinary skills and worked as a cook and baker for several establishments in the Bay Area. He ended his career as a supervisor at the Gerber plant in Oakland in 1985. He loved spending time with his friends and family, working in the garden, and attending the horse races.Sterling was preceded in death by his parents and his 4 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by 12 nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews – all of whom will miss him dearly. He will be remembered for his kind heart, generous spirit, and jovial nature.Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Sterling's life on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 1:30 at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward (see below). His remains will be placed at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, Ca. at a later date.In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
