Stephen "Steve" John Balero's Obituary
STEPHEN “STEVE” JOHN BALERO Born June 27, 1959 and entered peace-fully to rest January 29, 2008 with his family by his side. Steve was a Lieutenant for the Oakland Police Reserve and started his career by joining the police force in October 1989 as a reserve officer. In 1991 and 1993 he received the Officer of the Year Award. In 1992 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, having received several commendations for his exceptional service. He then was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1994. Between the years of 1995-2005 he received the Command Officer of the Year Award seven times. Because of his dedication, on September 21, 2007 Mayor Ronald V. Dellums declared it “Stephen John Balero” day in the City of Oakland. Steve also worked the last five years at Sybase in Dublin, California as the Senior Manager of Safety and Security. Steve was in charge of the buildings security systems, managing the field officers and provided private security to the executive staff. Steve loved his work at OPD and Sybase and thought of them as family. Steve was loved very much and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his parents, Joseph and Albina Balero of San Leandro; his siblings, Vickie Perreira of Hayward; Mike Balero and his wife Cindy of Livermore; and Thomas Balero of Salida. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews, Shelley Vasconcelos and her husband Mark of San Lorenzo; Jamie Perreira of San Leandro; Michelle and Joey Balero of Livermore; Jordan Balero of Salida; many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Great Friends. Services will be held on Saturday, February 9th at the Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd. in Hayward. The Chapel will be opened at 10:30am with services to start at 11:30am. Following the service, the family wishes to invite everyone to join them for a gathering to celebrate Steve’s life.
