Shizuko Whitaker's Obituary
Shizuko Whitaker (also known as Suzie) passed away peacefully on August 3, 2020. Her life journey spanned 87 years which began on Tinian Island. Her carefree youth playing in the sugar cane fields was shattered by WW2. After the American bombing/takeover of Tinian Island, she spent some time in an POW (Prisoner of War) camp with her siblings until relocation to Okinawa. There she met an American from Arkansas, James W. Whitaker, became a war bride, and then forged a new life in the USA. She was a resilient woman undaunted by many challenges-learning to speak and write a new language, adapting to a new culture and unfamiliar way of life, and becoming a naturalized citizen. She is known for her warm personality, her tasty cream pies, and tending her garden. Her bright spirit still shines and she will be remembered for her kindness, courage, strength and grace. Thanks for being a great Mom, Obaachan, Auntie, Sister, Spouse.
Shizuko will be greatly missed by her three children: Junko (H: Richard), Charles (W: Liz) and Steve (W: Tammy) along with her 3 grandchildren: Ross, Katie and Tori. Her beloved husband, James W. Whitaker passed away in 2011.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children in honor of Jim and Suzie Whitaker.
