Sadie B. Reed's Obituary
Sadie Barbara Reed was born on August 30,1936 to parents Cravon Reed & Ruth Hogan in Lake End, Louisiana. She lived most of her childhood in Shreveport, Louisiana amongst family and friends. At a tender age, Sadie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at Oakdale Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. She received her diploma from Springville High School in Coushatta, Louisiana and went on to pursue higher education at the illustrious Grambling State University, an HBCU in Grambling, Louisiana. During her undergraduate years, Sadie pledged into the Psi Beta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.Growing up in the household of her maternal grandmother Lou Law (“Momma Lou”), along with several other younger family members, Sadie took great care and pride in acting as a big sister to each of them, and formed a particularly tight bond with a younger cousin, Maxine McDonald. Sadie always prided herself in the role she took in loving, caring and nurturing Maxine in a motherly fashion. While in Louisiana, Sadie found love with William Ross and through their union she gave birth to a daughter, Goldie Ross and a son, Michael Ross.Seeking a better life, she relocated to Oakland, California in the late 1950’s, studied nursing and received certification as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She worked for over 20+ years at John Muir Memorial Hospital in Walnut Creek, California and finished her career in nursing at Clinton Village Convalescent Hospital in Oakland, California. During her time in the Bay Area, Sadie met Willie Ford, fell in love and late gave birth to a daughter, Stacey Ford.Sadie always walked to the beat of her own drum. She was fiercely independent, had a mind of her own, and was never a follower. Those who knew her would sometimes refer to her as being very strong willed, but also knew that Sadie truly had a loving and caring spirit. It is without a secret that Sadie had a servant’s heart and took great pride in her role as the President of the Pastor’s Aide Ministry at her church home, Revelation Baptist Church in Berkeley, CA under the tutelage of her pastor and true friend, Reverend Dr. James Abner. Sadie was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching national news and court television. In another life, she could have easily been a sports commentator, news anchor or an attorney, which she and her daughter Stacey often joked about.Sadie was abundantly blessed with friends and family whom she loved dearly, but would always say the person whose special friendship she would value throughout her lifetime was with James Williams; in addition, she often expressed that her grandson, Kimara Woolfolk was the person who brought her endless joy, was the love of her life and the apple of her eye. After the retirement, Sadie decided to relocate to her home state of Louisiana in 2006 along with Stacey and Kimara. Shortly after establishing roots in Bossier City, Lousiana, Sadie soon became an active member of New Elizabeth Baptist Church where her brother, the late Reverend Dr. Danny R. Mitchell, Sr., was Pastor.Sadie received her wings on August 5, 2018 surrounded by loved ones.
