Romulo Basuel was born on February 16, 1924, to Marcelo Basuel and Petra Nacino in Eguia, Dasol, Pangasinan, Philippines. Romulo passed away unexpectedly on July 13, 2022, at his home in Union City, California. He was 98 years old.
Romulo is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 72 years, Erlinda Basuel; his sons: Romy (Doris) Basuel Jr, Ruben (Charito) Basuel, Nestor (Agnes) Basuel, Virgil Basuel, and Jesse Basuel; his daughters: Eileen (Michael) Gavin and Melissa (Dan Lucero) Basuel; his grandchildren: Rommel (Mary) Basuel, Marni (Jay) de Leon, Marco Basuel, Kailani Basuel, Nestor Arnel Basuel Jr, Chelse Basuel, and Crystal Basuel; and his great-grandchildren: Jasmine, Leila, Hailey Alani, Samiera, Ariana, and Jayden Shane.
Romulo enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 2, 1946, at Subic Bay, Philippines. He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War with tours of duty on the USS Intrepid CVA 11, among other carriers and destroyers. He was part of the BOQ division at U.S. Naval Air Station, Midway Island in 1964. Romulo retired from active service as Petty Officer 1st Class from the U.S. Navy in 1966 when stationed at the U.S. Naval Station, Treasure Island. He then worked as a federal civilian employee at the U.S. Naval Supply Center, Oakland, California, and retired in 1986.
Romulo decided to have his family call the East Bay Area their home for its comfortable climate. As an Alameda County resident for over 58 years residing in Berkeley, Oakland, and Alameda, he ended their move to a permanent home in Union City, California, in 1976.
His favorite pastimes were cooking, fishing, gardening, watching professional sports, wagering on horses at the race tracks, playing cards with friends, taking leisurely walks in the neighborhood, and spending quality time with his family. His presence and smile will be dearly missed.
