Roberto Padua's Obituary
Roberto (“Bert”) Domingo Padua entered his next life at home in Union City on Sunday, April 14, 2019. Bert was 70 years young. The third oldest of six children, he was born on June 7, 1948 in Guimba, Nueva Ecija, Philippines.Bert spent his childhood in Guimba, before attending high school in Central Luzon State University, in Munoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. He performed leadership roles for various organizations such as the Future Farmers of the Philippines and Philippine Military Training before graduating in 1965. Bert continued his education at the University of the East in Manila, was a member of the ROTC and graduated in 1969 with a degree in Business Administration majoring in Accounting.On July 5, 1975 Bert married Malou, his wife of 44 years. He worked in the financial sector until immigrating to the United States in 1987 with his family. Union City became Bert‘s home for the next 32 years. He continued his career working with various Bay Area school districts, with his last position serving as the Executive Director of Internal Business at the Alameda County Office of Education prior to his retirement in 2012.By nature, Bert was a people person. He loved to socialize, made new friends easily and enjoyed helping others. After retiring, he continued as a consultant to assist his former peers. As treasurer for several Union City political campaigns and a former Union City Parks & Recreation Commissioner, Bert always found time to serve his local community. He also volunteered with the Asian American Federation of California and the Union City Friends of Sister Cities serving as treasurer for many years, as well as an active member of the Union City 50th Anniversary Committee.As a man who valued education at a young age, Bert never forgot his elementary school in Guimba. In his own small way, Bert supported the students by giving monetary awards to deserving graduates, donating books & sports equipment, and in the improvement of the school grounds, among other things. He also helped with the repairs of the local chapel. His many accomplishments came second only to his exemplary spirit. Known for his warm-hearted outlook to life, Bert’s magnetic presence engaged all who knew him. A man of impeccable style, he had an affinity for hats and facial hair trends. In his spare time, Bert loved visiting and spending time with family and friends, gardening, and cycling. Bert is now with his parents Adriano and Placida, and older sister Luz. He is survived by his sister Letty, and brothers Fred, Romy, and Zaldy; wife Malou; children Ria, J.R., Annie, and Nikki; daughter-in-law Mylene and sons-in-law Tony and Cole; and grandson Robert.Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at Chapel of the Chimes, Hayward from 5:00 to 8:30 pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Union City from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Internment at the Chapel of the Chimes will follow.
