Robert Briant Sr's Obituary
Robert Briant Sr. loving husband and proud father was born June 26, 1942 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the second child and first born son to Wheeler Briant Jr. and Manuella Chase. He married his sweetheart, Lilli Parker, on January 24, 1965. They were married for 59 years. He was the proud father of Ashleigh and Robert Jr. and found joy in his five grandchildren: Moriah, Elijah, Leilah, Samuel and Audrey.
Robert spent his youth in Vallejo and later in Oakland after his family moved to California in 1944. After graduating from McClymonds High School, he embarked on a successful career in electrical work. His expertise led him to work on numerous projects in the San Francisco Bay Area, including installing the lights on the San Mateo Bridge. In fact, Robert was a trailblazer! He was the first African-American to be a part of the apprenticeship program for IBEW Local 595 --- thus paving the way for future African-Americans to pursue a career in electrical work along this path. Later, he made news as he was chosen to serve as a Foreman and mentor, encouraging other People of Color to pursue careers in electrical work. Known for his strong work ethic, Robert remained an active memberof IBEW long after his retirement. He made many friendships along the way in his 60 years as a member of Local 595.
Robert had an infectious smile and laugh. He had a particular fondness for Rainbow Sherbet and Neopolitan ice cream, though, truthfully, he loved all kinds of ice cream! And, he looked forward to a spicy bowl of gumbo at each Holiday celebration. His enjoyment of physical exercise kept him in great shape throughout his life -- he especially enjoyed the practice of Martial Arts and Tai Chi over the span of 25 years. A lifelong learner, Robert was always immersed in a new book, with a deep passion for History, Science, and Mathematics. He had a profound love for the great outdoors and was an enthusiastic supporter of our National Parks. Many Summers involved road trips to National Parks - In fact, one Summer he and Lilli loaded the kids into the station wagon for a weeks long road trip through parts of Canada and the United States visiting many National Monuments and parks. Ultimately, Yosemite was his favorite, and he hiked Half Dome several times. Robert and Lilli shared their love of international travel with their children as well, exploring Canada, France, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Benin, and Senegal together. After retirement, he and Lilli continued to expand their travels, adding extensive travels through China, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Finally, the next generation was included in a memorable Alaskan cruise with their children and grandchildren. Robert was supportive of Lilli in her artistic and entrepreneurial endeavors. He could often be found by her side at art shows and in the gift shop. Always present, he cheered his children and grandchildren on in their achievements and took a keen interest in their latest aspirations. His pride in his family was evident and he never missed an opportunity to express it. Robert leaves behind a legacy of treasured memories that will forever be cherished by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wheeler and Manuella as well as siblings, Ann-Marie and David. He is survived by his wife, Lilli and children, Ashleigh (Kevin) and Robert Jr. (Elaina). In addition, he has a legacy in his grandchildren, Moriah, Elijah, Leilah, Samuel and Audrey. As well as, brother, Peter and sister, Carol and a host of nieces + nephews.
He was loved and lived a beautiful life.
