Richard Edwin Paulson's Obituary
Richard E. Paulson, 89, a resident of Brentwood, passed away at Sutter Delta Hospital in Antioch, California on Thursday, September 5, 2019. Born on May 18, 1930 in Seattle Washington, his mother, Helen Paulson, died shortly after childbirth. She left little Richard to be raised by her sister, Mary, and Mary’s husband, Dan Rasmussen. The new family began their life together in Fresno, where Richard spent his elementary school years, and later moved to San Leandro, where Richard attended high school and met his future bride, Beverly June Soares. After mustering out of the US Navy, Richard, known as Dick by all who knew him, began his civilian career as a union carpenter in San Leandro. It was there that Dick and Bev grew their young family until moving to Livermore in 1960, where they raised their four children. That change in residence brought with it a change in occupation for Dick. There were few construction jobs available, but never fear, always the quick study, Dick found employment as an auto mechanic. A couple years later, he started work as a teamster, eventually retiring from the same company in 1992.Never content to merely punch a clock and turn in his 9 to 5, at heart, Dick was an entrepreneur. While working full time, he managed first to start a business selling, installing, and maintaining citizens band radio equipment. Unfortunately, he was a decade ahead of the craze that later swept the nation. Undaunted, Dick then opened a similar business, Mobile Arts, which focused on car audio systems. But once again, his vision was ahead of its time. Proving that you can’t keep a good man down, Dick later returned to a love of his youth, photography. He not only opened a retail business, Foto Facets, but he also worked part-time as a photographer for the Independent newspaper. But even then, Dick wasn’t done; this time in sync with trends, he created 2/Tech Computer Services, which remained a viable concern well into his retirement.Carpenter, mechanic, teamster, entrepreneur, husband and father, Dick was also a friend to all who knew him. He opened his heart to everyone as though they were family. He was “game,” always willing to jump in and do whatever: new things, dangerous things, hard things, fun things. He rode ATVs with his family well into his 70s, and he never tired of watching his sons and grandsons play ball or his daughter or grandchildren sing. He was always only a phone call away from friends and family in need. He was cowboy strong, and puppy sweet. He was quick to forgive and held no grudges. For those who knew him, he made his mark. Now his journey leads him to waltz, again, with his beloved: Beverley J Soares-Paulson.Dick is survived by his loving children, Cyndee and Mark Heer of Oakley, David and Kathy Paulson of Brentwood, and Daryl and Jennifer Paulson of Dublin. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.Family and friends may visit on Friday, September 13, 2019 at 11:30PM.
