Richard D. Lee, 96, of Union City, CA died peacefully in his sleep on April 3, 2017.Born September 29, 1920, Richard was the son of the late Joseph and Nancy Lee. Richard grew up in Los Angeles, CA, along with his sisters Ruth and Irene. The three children were the first generation born in the United States, to parents who both emigrated from Korea at the turn of the last century. Richard graduated from Polytechnic High School in Los Angeles, and he was most proud of his service to his country in the U.S. Army.Drafted just 11 days before his 20th birthday, Richard was a private in the General Officers branch of the Selectees during World War II. He trained and served in the medical office on base in San Antonio, Texas, until his company was called up to the Philippines.After the war, Richard and his family relocated to Hayward, CA where he became a die-hard Raiders fan. He worked several jobs as a store clerk and grocer for Safeway and Mayfair until he retired.Richard loved the outdoors, and had a passion for salmon fishing. He lived life to the fullest and valued time spent with his friends duck hunting, bowling, or taking casino trips to Reno.Those who knew Richard well will miss his annual Christmas cards, his signature laugh, and the way he always had quip to put a smile on your face. He is survived by his sister, Ruth, niece Karen LaFountaine, niece Kathy Li (John Moxley), and great-niece, Jennifer (Gary) Loop, and many friends who were more like family.
