Raymond Joseph Gomes' Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Raymond “Ray” Joseph “Joe” Gomes announce his passing on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at the age of 89 years. Ray was the second eldest of the nine children produced from the relation of Margaret Powers and John Gomes of Oakland, California.
Ray served in the United States Army in his youth and was a proud veteran of a foreign war. He was bestowed the Purple Heart Medal of Honor for injuries sustained in combat. After his time of service, he would find employment and eventually retire from the Sunshine Biscuit Company in Oakland, California after putting in over 30 years with this company.
While at the Sunshine Biscuit Company Ray was set up on a blind date with Dorothy Angelina Borges of Tracy, California. It was love at first sight and the two were joined in marriage on April 26, 1958, and they took up residence in Oakland, California. Eventually the couple would purchase their family residence in Hayward, California to raise their family. To support his ever-growing family Ray held multiple jobs, yet he was never too old to play and have fun with his children. He also was a devoted,
beloved grandfather and great-grandfather. Ray will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
Raymond is predeceased by his beloved wife Dorothy, and a daughter Nancy. He is survived by his children Thomas Gomes; Sherry Gomes-Miller; Steven Gomes; Carol Barraza; Mary Beth Howland; and twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He will always be in our hearts and forever in our memories.
