Ravinder Singh Grewal's Obituary
Ravinder Singh Grewal, passed away on January 2nd, but lived a life defined by curiosity, compassion, and an unshakable belief in the goodness of people. Born in Kenya on February 2, 1962, he spent his early years moving across continents—first to India, then England—before arriving in the United States as a teenager. Those early experiences shaped him profoundly. He grew into someone who felt at home anywhere in the world and who carried a global perspective with humility and grace.
A voracious reader, Ravinder devoured books with the same enthusiasm he brought to every passion in his life. He was articulate and thoughtful, the kind of person who could turn a simple conversation into something expansive and meaningful. His curiosity was boundless, and he shared it generously.
His adult life took him across the world once again. He lived in Hong Kong, Prague, Mumbai, and Mexico City, as well as in numerous cities throughout the United States. Each place added new layers to his understanding of people and culture, and he embraced every chapter with openness and gratitude. He built friendships everywhere he went, leaving behind a trail of people who felt supported and uplifted by him.
Ravinder approached life with a spirit of adventure. He picked up cooking, sailing, and rock climbing along the way—pursuits he embraced with both enthusiasm and discipline. His cooking brought people together, his sailing brought him peace, and his climbing brought him challenge. He lived fully, always seeking the next horizon.
But above all, Ravinder was defined by his heart. He rarely met a person he didn’t feel compelled to help. He led with open arms, offering support without hesitation and standing up for those who needed a voice. His instinct to serve was not something he performed—it was simply who he was. He believed deeply in kindness, in showing up, and in doing what was right even when no one was watching.
Ravinder is survived by his children, Reshma and Sumit Grewal, of whom he was immensely proud. They were central to him and the legacy he cherished most.
He is also survived by his partner, Vicky Collins, who brought love, companionship, and steadiness to his life; his mother, Daljeet Grewal; his brothers, Kirnbir and Harpreet Grewal; his sisters-in-laws, Birinder Grewal and Sharon French; and his beloved nephews and nieces -Aman, Inder, Ishan, and Anya Grewal - each of whom held a special place in his heart.
A memorial service celebrating Ravinder’s life will be held at the Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, California, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory and share stories of the kindness and generosity he offered so freely. Full service details and the online memorial page can be found at: https://hayward.chapelofthechimes.com/obituaries/ravinder-grewal/obituary.
He leaves behind a life rich with stories, friendships, and love—a life that touched continents and hearts alike. His absence is immeasurable, but so is the gift of having known him.
May he rest in peace, and his memory continue to inspire the same curiosity and compassion he offered so freely.
