Qu Chao Fong's Obituary

On May 23rd, 2020, Qu Chao Fong passed away peacefully at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, York Kee Chan; children Yukon, Susie, Yupin; daughters-in-law Vornlen, Mary; son-in-law Doug; grandchildren Matthew, Stephanie, Christopher, Nathan, Benjamin; granddaughter-in-law Stephanie.
QC Fong was born in 1934 in Kaiping, Kwangtung Province and moved to Hong Kong in 1950. A graduate of Pui Ching Middle School, he attended Taiwan University majoring in Chemical Engineering. Upon his return to Hong Kong, he served as a civil servant. QC Fong also operated an import and export trading company with a relative. He had a strong interest in electronics and photography. His color photograph, "The Young Girl," was selected and exhibited by the 35-mm Photography Society in Hong Kong's City Hall in 1961.
QC Fong immigrated to San Francisco with his family in 1970. In 1971, he studied thermoplastics forming techniques and mold design under Professor Charles McCrea at Plastic Productions Co. in Redwood City, California. Twenty-six pieces from his designs were chosen for the "Good Design" collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
In 1982, QC Fong was appointed by Rohm and Haas Co. of Philadelphia to test their new continuous-casted Plexiglasâ sheets exclusively in his Redwood City plant. His 1984 treatise, “Polymerized and Annealed AN/MMA Cell Cast Sheet,” provided guidance for the manufacturing process used by Chi Mei Industrial Co. Ltd. of Tainan, Taiwan. Although often imitated, the superb design and craftsmanship of crystal-like products by QC Fong remain unequaled. He was a well-known designer and manufacturer in acrylic and other thermoplastic products.
QC Fong retired in 1993. In his spare time, he was an avid ham radio operator and a member of the American Radio Relay League since 1975. He was the chief editor of Pui Ching Alumni Association Newsletter in San Francisco. In 1995, QC Fong single-handedly managed the Pui Ching Chung-Sheh (Class of 1955) Anniversary Yearbook project
