Pearl L Smith's Obituary
Pearl was bon on January19, 1925, in Jenny lind, Arkansas. Her given name was Pearl Lottie Lee Luna. She had four brothers and one sister. After the death of the two young brothers, she became the baby of the family. When Pearl was eighteen she left home and traveled to San Francisco to live with her brother Les and his wife. She went to work in the ship yards and was one of the “Rosie the Riveters”.On the weekends, she and her girlfriends would spend all day at Play land at the Beach. One evening while at dinner with a girlfriend, they met two young sailors. The young men came over and introduced themselves and ended up spending the rest of the evening talking. Who would have thought that one of the young sailors, Kenneth, would be Pearl’s future husbandThey only knew each other for three weeks when Kenneth proposed. Showing Pearl a letter from his Captain that said he had three weeks to spend with his wife, he said, “Do you know that that means? So what do you say?” Pearl said, “Yes,” That was 1943, and they moved to San Diego into Navy housing. Peggy was born in 1946, and Max came along in 1948.After the Navy tour was over, the moved to South San Francisco and Kenneth took a job at American Can Company. they boutht their first home. Pearl was a stay at home mother and homemaker until the Korean Crisis. Kenneth was called back to duty, and Pearl took a job in town so they would not lose their home. When Kenneth’s Navy tour was over they moved to Hayward, CA, and bought their house on Eldridge Avenue. That was 1954. Kenneth went to work for National Can CompanyPearl got her first driver’s license in 1969, so she could come and visit her first grandchild, Brian, anytime she wanted. Later in 1976, she decided to take a job with Hayward Unified School District in food service. She worked for them until she retired in 2004.In 2006 she moved to Trilogy at Rio Vista, Ca, and stayed for five years until she moved to Merrill Gardens assisted living in Vacaville, CA.Pearl lost the two most important men in her life when her husband Kenneth died in 1995 and her son Max in 2011.Pearl leaves behind her daughter Peggy Pine, son-in-law Michael Pine, daughter-in-law Cheryl Smith, grandson Brian Pine, grandaughter Lisa Kehr, and grandsons Shawn Smith and Ryan Smith. She also has five great granddaughters Natalie Pine, Rebecca Pine, Neliah Kehr, Ashlyn Kehr, and Brielle Smith. Pearl was a devoted grandmother and was very proud to say she had five beautiful great granddaughters.We love you Mom and you will be missed
