Pearl Quiett Henry's Obituary
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.”
Pearl Quiett Henry, the second child of the late Emel Quiett, Sr. and the late Mary Julia Jenkins Quiett was born August 23, 1933, in Ethel, LA. She passed away July 9th in Hayward, CA surrounded by daughters Dawania and Jackie.
Pearl moved to the community of Zion City with her late parents in 1939. At an early age she was baptized and joined Little Beach Grove Baptist Church on Hooper Road, pastored by the late Rev. Noah C. Chinn. Later the church was moved to Zion City and the name was changed to Greater Beach Grove Baptist Church. Sister Henry continued to serve under the leadership of the late Rev. Emmitt Spurlock. She was faithful and dedicated to her church and taught Sunday School for many years. One of her favorite scriptures was “if my people, which are called by my name would humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chron. 7:14.
Pearl attended school in East Baton Rouge Parish and graduated from McKinley Senior High School in 1953. Although she did not attend college, she recognized the importance of education and sent all five of her children to college.
In November 1966, Pearl married Cephas John Henry. They were married for 42 years until Cephas’ passing in 2008. During her lifetime she worked in numerous jobs including: attendant at Ryan Juvenile Detention, licensed insurance agent for Primerica Life Insurance, and certified nurse assistant.
Pearl enjoyed life and she shared her zest for life with those she loved the most, her family and anyone else who had the opportunity to meet her. She also loved cooking, baking, gardening, making people laugh with her jokes, and anything related to fashion. In 2015, she moved to Hayward, CA to live with her youngest daughter Dawania. As a Southern Belle, it did not take Pearl long to gain the attention and adoration of Californians with her southern charm. She earned the name “Mother Pearl”, which she was proud to be called. She leaves behind to cherish sweet memories four daughters: Dr. Jacqueline J. Hill (Jerome), Bowie, MD; Charlotte Hopkins (David), Mesa, AZ; Gretchen Malone, Baton Rouge, LA; and Dawania Quiett, Hayward, CA. One son, Albert E. (AJ) Jones (Deborah), Rosenberg, TX. Four granddaughters: Dr. Tiffany Hill Antione, Jacksonville, FL; Martina Malone, Baton Rouge, LA; Carly Hopkins, Mesa, AZ; and Alexis Malone, Dallas, TX. Six grandsons: Christopher Hill, San Antonio, TX; Jarrod and Taylon Jones, Houston, TX; Blair and Gabriel Hopkins, Mesa, AZ, and Joshua Malone, New Orleans, LA. Three sisters: Idell Q. Hawthorne and Gladiola Q. Miles, Baton Rouge, LA; and Barbara Q. Hilliard, Fort Worth, TX. One brother, Emel Quiett, Jr., Baton Rouge; and a host of relatives and friends. Pearl was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Cephas J. Henry, infant son Charles Baxter Henry, parents Emel and Julia Quiett; and four brothers: Randolph, David, Donneal, and Earl Quiett.
