Patricia Ryaby Backer's Obituary
Patricia Ryaby Backer, age 65, died peacefully on September 24, 2021 at home in Fremont, California.
Patricia was born in New Jersey on April 24, 1956 to Jack and Louise Ryaby. Patricia is survived by her husband of 30 years, Victor, and her 18-year-old daughter, Taylor Backer. She is also survived by her siblings Jane Hoste, Mary Natoli, Karen Ryaby, Ann Weimer, and Jimmy Ryaby.
Pat was a professor at San Jose State University in the Aviation and Technology Department for more than 30 years. She was very engaged across campus, serving on many committees and research projects. Pat was very involved with student success initiatives, which culminated in her receiving the California State University’s 2020 Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award. Besides spending time at San Jose State University, she was involved with many community organizations, including Girl Scouts and Los Altos United Methodist Church. The Girl Scouts honored Pat for her generous and lengthy service by honoring her with the Chris Arkley Significant Impact Award.
Pat loved to travel, gourmet food and wine, and all things Disney. She was a bright personality to everyone who knew her. She touched many people with her generosity and passion for life.
