Oscar Penaflor's Obituary
Oscar Kong Peñaflor of Hayward, California, passed away on March 12, 2025 at the age of 75. He was born on July 25, 1949 in Manila, Philippines, the eldest of Chan Lee Kong and Efegenia Duka Peñaflor’s seven children. Oscar immigrated to the United States of America in May 1980. He was a loving husband to Rhinel, a proud father to Jeremy and Jenilee, and a cherished Lolo/Lulu to Lilly, Adelyn, Vivian, Nova, and Sterling. Oscar was an active member of Saint Clement Church in various capacities such as usher, reader, and eucharistic minister. He was a very religious and faithful servant of the Lord, having served in the Faith Formation Ministry for many years. He graduated from the Pastoral School of Ministry in the Oakland Diocese and was a regular attendee at the annual Religious Congress in Anaheim and other religious conferences in New Orleans and Minneapolis.
His love for the ministry of music went beyond the church walls. Oscar loved to sing, and in his final years, was active in the Aphasia Tones Choir, which was an instrumental therapeutic activity. He was also an avid sports fan, rooting for his favorite teams, the Oakland A’s, Golden State Warriors, and Boston Celtics. Beyond pro sports, Oscar was a staple at Jenilee and Jeremy’s performances and competitions. Whether it was a piano recital or a basketball game, you could count on seeing Oscar front and center sporting his #1 fandom among the crowd. Oscar often traveled wherever and whenever Jeremy played or coached including Sacramento, Monterey, Gilroy, San Luis Obispo, and other distant places just to watch his son's game.
Oscar will be remembered for his sweet and selfless personality… someone who always put the needs of others before his own. Whether it was a ride needed, an assistant to a landscaping project, or some boxes moved, everyone knew they could always count on Oscar. None more so than his wife of 47 years, to whom he was a forever dance partner, travel companion, and dinner date. Oscar was a simple man, without the money or looks of celebrities, but a heart of gold and the heart of Jesus.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 26th from 4 to 8 PM at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 27th at 10:30 AM at Saint Clement Church in Hayward.
