Oma Kumari Aggarwal was born on June 8, 1934 in Lahore, formerly India, now Pakistan, daughter of Srimati Bhagvanti and Lala Amarnath Bansal. Her father passed away at an earlier age when she was 8. She moved to Delhi during India’s Partition in 1947 with her mom. Due to the violent train attacks, Oma and her mom were seriously injured. Her mother did not survive and Oma lost one of her kidneys at the age of 13. She was married as an orphan/refugee in a Delhi camp, to Brij Lal Aggarwal. After marriage, she lived in Delhi, Rajasthan, Assam, Manipur, eventually settling in Kaleke (Punjab). She has 5 children - 2 sons - Vijay and Papu, and 3 daughters - Raj, Usha and Puja Garg. After her husband’s untimely death, Oma became the head of the household, facing extreme financial hardships to raise her children. She educated herself even during these tough times and limited resources, becoming a teacher, and then later joined Indian Railways in 1962, selected out of 500 applicants. She was stationed and found residence in Ludhiana, Punjab, never missing a day of work and received numerous awards for her dedicated service, retiring with distinction as a Chief Inspector of Tickets in 1992. Through her eldest son, Dr. Vijay Kumar Aggarwal, she traveled to Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA, several times since 1983. She moved to Fremont, California in 1998 to live with her 3 daughters and family, living there for 22 years till her last days. She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren, 13 great-grandsons and 1 great-granddaughter. She will remain in our thoughts and prayers for ever. May her soul rest in peace.
