Ofelia Manganaan Castaneda Lum's Obituary
Ofelia “Fe” Josephine Manganaan Castañeda Lum was born at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Francisco on March 19, 1967, to Oscar Eugeñio Castañeda and Lolita Antonio Manganaan. Ofelia was a proud SF-Native-Ilocano-American who was raised in the Sunnyside District of San Francisco. She attended Sunnyside and John McClaren Elementary Schools, James Denman Middle School, Balboa High School (℅ 1985), and City College of San Francisco. She also attended Silicon Valley College to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician.
She was a big Bay Area sports fan, but her favorite team was the San Francisco Giants. Ofelia had a tradition of preparing for the start of baseball season by celebrating the end of every NFL Super Bowl.
In 1987-1992, Ofelia worked in the Presidio of San Francisco, in Building 34, as a computer operator. In 1992-1995 she was a Pharmacy Technician in Hayward. Most recently, Ofelia was a proud FedEx Operations Agent for 23 years, 1999 - 2022. The majority of her career was spent at the Menlo Park station, until she transferred to the Stockton Station in 2016. She made many lifelong friendships at both the Menlo Park and Stockton FedEx stations, and at a FedEx training course in Seattle.
In 2010, Ofelia suffered a stroke leaving her with left sided weakness. But with great perseverance, and the love and support of her “Honey” Tennyson, family, and friends, she regained the ability to independently manage her activities of daily living, such as walking, driving, and cooking. Her greatest accomplishments after recovery were participating in the San Francisco Giants 5K, returning to work at FedEx, and marrying the love of her life, Tennyson Lum, in 2013.
Ofelia’s family and friends were her world. Being around family and friends was her favorite pastime. In 2020, she adopted her Labrador mix, Maka. He was her emotional support during the pandemic.
In November 2022, Ofelia found a lump on her neck. She immediately began treatments. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with Metastatic Anaplastic Thyroid cancer in January 2023. A week before her passing, she was placed on hospice care. Ofelia passed away peacefully with her “Dahddy” at her side, four days shy of her 56th birthday. During her journey, she thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the myriad of family and friends who took time to visit, call, and message her. She made sure everyone knew she loved them dearly.
Ofelia is predeceased by her Husband Tennyson Lum. She is survived by her “Dahddy” Oscar Castañeda, “Mommay” Lolita Manganaan Hilario, Stepmother “Ma” Thelma Castañeda, Manong Adam Castañeda, Sister-In-Law Blanca Castañeda, Little Sister Yolanda Castañeda-Futol, Brother-In-Law Jhulsany Futol, Nieces Jessica Castañeda and Jhayalani Futol, Nephew Ahlosi Futol, and countless family and friends.
