Norman M. SilveiraMarch 19, 1923 – November 7, 2017Norman M. Silveira, 94, passed away on Tuesday, November 07, 2017. He was born in Alvarado (now Union City), California, lived most of his life in Union City, and recently moved to Modesto to be near his daughters. Norman graduated from Washington High School in 1942. He worked in the Richmond shipyards before he served in WWII, where he was in the Army’s 11th Airborne Division, Second Battalion of the 187th Medics.Norman loved his country and was very patriotic and civic minded. He belonged to the VFW Paul E. Rivers Post 7906 for over 40 years. He was a volunteer fireman with the Alvarado/Union City Fire Department from 1953 until 1963. He served on the Alvarado Sanitary District Commission for four years. He was also a member of the Union City Planning Commission from 1966 until 1969. He retired from the New Haven Unified School District as Manager of Maintenance and Operations in 1982 after 30 years of service. After retirement Norman cared for his beloved wife Bernice (Babe) of 65 years before her death in 2013.He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mary Silveira, and his sisters Lorraine Silva and Isabel Hernandez. He is survived by his sister Jeanette Ramm, his daughters Norma Jean Armstrong (David) of Turlock, CA and Deborah Marie Knupfer (Grant) of Manteca, CA, granddaughter Kristen Noel (David), grandsons Scott Knupfer (Stephanie), Ryan Knupfer, and Eric Armstrong (Stacey), great-grandchildren Jordan Knupfer, Brendan Knupfer, Jackson Noel, Titus Armstrong, Elliana Armstrong, Josiah Armstrong, and Victoria Noel. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.Visitation will be on Monday, November 13th from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Chapel Of The Chimes in Hayward. A service will be held on Tuesday, November 14th at 9:00 AM at the Chapel Of The Chimes open to the public at 8:30 AM. Burial will follow at the San Joaquin National Cemetery in Santa Nella at 1:00 PM. Donations may be made to Alexander Cohen Hospice House, Hughson, CA (https://hospiceheart.org).
