Nestor Caranay Basuel's Obituary
Nestor Caranay Basuel Sr. was born on May 31, 1956, to Romulo Basuel and Erlinda Caranay Basuel in Bani, Pangasinan, Philippines. Nestor passed away peacefully on October 13, 2024, in Fremont, California. He was 68 years old.
Nestor was preceded in death by his father, Romulo. He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Agnes, his daughter, Kailani Nichole, his son, Nestor Arnel Jr., and his dog, Anak, as well as his mother, Erlinda, his brothers Romy, Ruben, Virgil, and Jesse, and his sisters Eileen and Melissa.
Nestor spent the first portion of his childhood in the Philippines and would often speak fondly of his memories while living there. His parents relocated the family to Alameda, California, in early 1964 where Nestor then spent the remainder of his childhood and his teenage years. He then graduated from Encinal High School in 1974. While Nestor attended the College of Alameda, he decided to apply for the U.S. Postal Service. In 1975, Nestor accepted a Mail Handler Equipment Operator position. His postal career included a short stint as Acting Supervisor. He was employed at the San Francisco Network Distribution Center in Richmond, California, for 42 years until his retirement in May 2018.
In 1984, Nestor met the love of his life, Agnes, where they then spontaneously married at Chapel of the Bells in Reno in 1986. They decided to plant roots in Fremont that same year, purchasing the home they would build and raise their family in. Their first born daughter, Kailani, was born in 1988, followed by their son, Nestor Arnel Jr., in 1992. In 2019, the family adopted their beloved yorkie, Anak, which Nestor developed a special bond and affinity for, bringing more joy to the last few years of Nestor’s life.
An avid fisherman, Nestor and his parents and siblings would often go fishing and net crabbing from the Berkeley, Treasure Island and Pacifica piers. Nestor would also often fish from the shores of the Alameda Rockwall, the Alameda side of the Oakland Estuary, Lake Chabot, San Pablo reservoirs, and Quarry Lakes. He enjoyed going deep sea fishing with a group of his friends, getting up very early to be out on the fishing boat before sunrise. Nestor was also an avid gardener, growing all kinds of fruits and vegetables and giving it away to his family and friends, his “fruits of labor.”
Including his love of fishing and gardening, Nestor’s favorite pastimes were photography, bowling, collecting sports memorabilia and toys, watching professional sports, betting at the card tables at the casinos, and spending quality time with his family. Nestor believed in hard work and enjoyed giving advice on anything that comes to mind. He had such a giving heart, never expecting anything in return. His presence, smile, and humble laugh will be sorely missed.
