Mildred Collins' Obituary
Mildred Collins, 64 passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2002 at North Bay Medical Hospital in Fairfield, California. She was born to T.J. and Maggie Brazley on April 15, 1938 in Magnolia, Mississippi. Mildred grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. At the age of 18 she came to Oakland, California to visit her brother for the summer and decided to stay. She met Alphonso Collins in 1958, they were married for 19 years and had two children, Allen & John Collins. She was a surrogate mother for numerous nieces and nephews, in addition to several foster children. Her pride and joy was her six grandchildren. Mildred worked as a nurse for 27 years, as well as running residential care homes for elderly and the disabled. She established an annual charity Christmas toy drive for under privileged children in Hayward, California area.She attended St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland, California for 44 years, under the leadership of the late Dr. C.J. Anderson. Singing with The Echos of Zion Choir. As well as participated in The Ruth Circle, and was a regular attendee at Sunday School. Her care for others was rooted in her faith in God and her belief that we are all responsible for each other.Mildred was survived by her two sons, Allen Collins and John Collins, daughters-in-law, Yvonne Collins & Tami Collins, grandchildren, Antwuan Collins, Melinda Collins, Jermaine Collins, Quincy Collins, Joshua Collins, Ashley Collins and two great-grandchildren.She's also survived by six sisters and brothers as well as numerous nieces and nephews.Quiet Hour will be held on Monday, August 12, 2002 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home; 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, CA 94544.A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church; 1909 Market Street, Oakland, CA 94608.CHAPEL OF THE CHIMES MEMORIAL PARK & FUNERAL HOME -HAYWARD, CA (510) 471-3363."SERVICE OF MARKED DISTINCTION"
