Michael B. Mitchell's Obituary
Michael B. Mitchell, 73, of Castro Valley, CA, unexpectedly passed away in his home Sunday evening on April 14, 2019. Michael was born in Oakland on December 18, 1945 as the third of four children. He loved his two sisters, Margaret and Lori, and his older brother, Gary, dearly. Michael grew up in San Leandro and lived his entire life in Alameda County where he met and married his college sweetheart, Janice. Janice and Michael were married on June 20, 1970 at Assumption Church in San Leandro, CA. Along with their dog, Shadow, Michael and Janice often traveled to National and State parks to go hiking and camping; their favorite spot was The Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt County.Michael was proud to be a member of the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He also had a deep interest in United States History and loved reading various books on the subject, especially biographies on U.S. presidents and generals. Sports were also a huge passion of Michael’s. His support of the Warriors, A’s, and Raiders was unwavering, even when victories were scarce. But most of all Michael and Janice were always there to support their two sons in all of their athletic and academic achievements. There was never a single moment in the lives of their children when their children did not know there was someone out there who cared about them, who would help them if they were in need, who would listen to them endlessly over the phone; the generosity of both Michael and Janice is unsurpassable. Michael’s family hopes that those of you who had the good fortune to meet him will remember him fondly. He is survived by his wife, Janice, and his two sons, Matthew and Joseph. Michael’s family was always important to him and he always made sure that he was there for them. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and good-natured sense of humor. There will be a viewing with refreshments provided from 10 am – 12 pm on Thursday April 25, 2019 for anyone who wishes to pay their final respects.
