Merlin Burkenbine's Obituary
Merlin Nelson Burkenbine Feb. 19, 1922 – Oct. 9, 2008 Resident of Hayward 61 yrs. Died at age 86 after an acute bout of respiratory failure. Preceded in death by his devoted wife of 58 years, Gladys. He is survived by his two daughters, Bonita Chapman and Joiane Mickaels. “Grandpa Burky” also will be missed by granddaughters Heidi and Heather Chapman. “Fishing buddies” Bill Wood and Melvin Durham shared a strong bond of friendship over 40 years with “Mernie”. Son-in-law James Chapman, along with long time close family friends will too remember “Mernie” with great affection. Merlin was a World War II Naval Veteran; after an honorable discharge he worked 36 years as a federal civil servant. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Operation Helping Heal, Inc., which provides aid to our returning Iraq War veterans. We, your daughters, know you are no longer suffering and your soul is at rest. You served your country and your loved ones well, Dad.
