MELVIN ARTHUR NATHAN's Obituary
Melvin A. Nathan, 90Melvin A. Nathan, peacefully went home to be with, his Lord and Savior, on May 5, 2014.Melvin was born on a farm on November 26, 1923, in Humphrey, Nebraska. Proceeded in death by his parents, Gustav and Anna Nathan, and his brothers Everett and Earl Nathan.Between the end of WWII and the Korean war, Melvin joined the US Navy where he served as an Aviation Machinist Mate. Preferring the warmer climate of California to Nebraska, he remained in the San Francisco Bay Area, eventually taking residence to raise a family in Newark CA. Melvin held various clerical positions over his 30 year career while employed at Heublein, Inc. in Menlo Park before retiring in 1989. He was a faithful member and at one time deacon, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Newark, CA.In his retirement he enjoyed volunteering in the community. At Lincoln Elementary he worked in the Science Program where he was recognized with a community Volunteer of the Year Award. Melvin also enjoyed volunteering at the Newark Senior Center calling Bingo for many years. He enjoyed delivering meals and visiting with members of the community through the Meals on Wheels program. Melvin had many loves and passions, particularly, his love of singing was enjoyed by all who heard him. He was known as an avid community gardener often tending several plots each season in order to share the fruits of his labor with family, friends and neighbors. He was always quick to provide growing and cooking tips for the numerous vegetables he cultivated.He is survived by his faithful wife, Barbara, of 57 years; his sister Nora Graber, and his two children, son Matthew and Leslie Nathan, son Michael and Tara Nathan, with their two children and Melvin’s grandchildren, Cody and Trevor Nathan.The viewing will be 4:30-9:00p p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward.The funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the First Presbyterian Church in Newark, CA.Burial will follow at the Chapel of the Chimes, Garden of Light Building At 2:30 p.m.Memorial may be sent to the American Heart Assocciation.Online condolences may be sent to www.lifemarkgroup.comChapel of the Chimes is in charge of arrangements.
