MELVIN DUNBAR's Obituary
Melvin Dunbar was born May 29, 1949 and in Hollandale, Mississippi to Edgar Dunbar Sr. and Dorothy Cusic Dunbar. Melvin attended school in Leland, Mississippi. In high school he was a star athlete in track and football. After graduating in 1968, Melvin enlisted in the US Marine Corp. He did a tour of duty in Vietnam and in 1971 was discharged. A year later Melvin joined the Marine Reserve and served five years.
In 1971, Melvin married his childhood sweetheart, Sylvia Delaine Akins. To this union three children were born: Melvin Kenyatta, Tiffany Alesha, and Joseph Jerald.
Melvin accepted Christianity at the age of 10 and was baptized at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Greenville, Mississippi. He later joined Bethel Baptist Church of Union City.
Melvin was a dedicated husband and father. He loved children and was known as “PaPa” or Mr. Papa at his church. He departed this life May 9, 2024.
Melvin leaves to cherish his precious memory: his wife Sylvia of 53 years, his daughter Tiffany Alesha, his sons Melvin Kenyatta and Joseph Jerald; sister Dorothy Armstrong, Betty Wilson, Barbara Webb, and Gwendolyn Dunbar; several Uncles, several Aunts and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces and Nephews.
