Marjorie Mader's Obituary
Marjorie Jane Mader Oct. 27, 1918 – May 28, 2009 Resident of Fremont Born Marjorie Jane Helen Brown to Forrest and Della Brown in Turlock, CA, Marjorie spent her childhood there until her mother married her second husband Walter Runckel of Bolinas, CA, and they moved permanently to Oakland. CA. Marjorie attended Frick Jr. High and Castlemont High School in Oakland and was active in Job’s Daughters in her youth. She attended University of California, Berkeley, was an active member of Alpha Gamma Delta, and although loved the study of chemistry, she graduated from UC Berkeley in 1940 with a degree in Economics. After graduation she attended Heald Business College in Oakland. Marjorie worked in San Francisco until her marriage to Conrad (Connie) R. Mader in 1942. Marjorie was the devoted mother of four children and returned to the workforce in the early 1960’s and eventually began working at Chabot Jr. College, where she was the secretarial assistant to the Dean of Instruction. Long before computers, of her many duties she was much appreciated for her impeccable typing and proofreading of the college catalogs. She worked at Chabot for 15 years until she retired early to care for her elderly parents. Marjorie and her older brother Harold were childhood dancers and performed at many venues in the East Bay, including the Paramount, Grand Lake, and Fox Theaters in Oakland, and Neptune Beach in Alameda. Marjorie danced professionally up until the time she married. The family moved to Hawai’i in 1949 and Marjorie studied hula. She was an accomplished dancer and danced with charm and grace well into her late 70’s. Throughout her life Marjorie had a wide circle of friends and was admired for her kindness, intelligence, and her spirited sense of humor. She loved playing cards, gardening, and bowling, was an avid crossword and acrostic player and lived a very active life well into her eighties. After the death of her beloved husband Connie in 1981, she traveled and returned to dance (tap and line dancing). Marjorie loved learning and taking on new intellectual challenges, evident in her newfound interest in computers at the age of 79. Marjorie was a member of Centerville Presbyterian Church of Fremont and served as deacon there until she suffered a stroke in December, 2003. Marjorie is beloved by her family and is survived by her son Bill Mader (wife Brenda), daughters Marijane Mader, Judith Mader Mumford (husband Valentino), and Carole Mader Barber (husband Paul). She is the cherished grandmother of Eowyn Mader Williams (husband Jeff), Logan Mader (wife Lati Grobman), Nathan Mader (partner Liz Canas), Belen Greene (partner George Earth), Emily Barber, and Charlotte Barber. She leaves two dear great-grandchildren, Samuel and Walter Williams. She was preceded in death by her treasured husband Connie (Aug. 12, 1981), and brother Harold Brown (Feb. 27, 2009). Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Sunday, June 14, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at her daughter’s home, 3258 Lake Pillsbury Drive, Fremont.
