Marjorie Chew's Obituary
Marjorie Chew 'Margie' August 23, 1931 ' February 16, 2008 Marjorie Ann Cowan was born on August 23, 1931 in the town of Lykens, Pennsylvania. She was the fifth of the six children born to Mary and Edgar Cowan. She lived through the depression sharing many of her life experiences about the depression. As a young adult she worked her summer breaks as a waitress in summer lodges in the Poconos Mountains in Pennsylvania. She met and married George J. Thomas and became the wife of an Air Force Patrol Officer that led her to live at different Air Force Base housing all over the United States. While stationed at Sacramento Air Force Base, the couple discovered the Bay Area and later made it their home. After living in San Leandro they finally settled in Hayward where Marjorie remained. After 25 years of marriage, it ended in divorce and Marjorie met the true love of her life, Donald Chew. They became husband and wife and had a wonderful marriage. Marjorie worked outside the home for the first time in her life as a housekeeper for a retirement home in Hayward and was a valued employee for 25 years. In her retirement she enjoyed oil painting, macramé, cooking, and gardening. She had 'Garden Wars' with her neighbors and always gave away more product and flowers than she kept. Making many friends along the way, Marjorie was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hayward, California. Marjorie has three living children, Deb Darr (Greg) of Oregon, George F. Thomas (Sharon) of Washington, and Robert C. Thomas (Adrian) of Fairfield, California; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Edgar; her brothers, Robert, Edgar and David; husband, Donald; son, John Raymond; and grandson, Jeffery. Visitation will be held at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, Friday, February 22, 2008 from 9:30am ' 12:30pm, Graveside Service at 1:00pm at Chapel of the Chimes, and the Memorial/Reception at 3:00pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Hayward.
