Marian C. Hammond's Obituary
Marian C. Hammond of Hayward, California, left this world to join her husband of 52 years, Joseph Hammond, on Tuesday morning, April 15, 2008. Born in Ramage, West Virginia, December 8, 1919, of parents Jack Booker Shumate and Sadie Mearl Workman, she moved to California in 1945. She is survived by daughters Terri Humphrey and Lisa Hammond, and grandsons Ryan Shelby and Chris Shelby. Her closest nieces and nephews include Rebecca Pollack, Jack Shumate III, Barbara Lacerenza, and Stephen Kay, Mary Ellen Mullen and Thomas Mullen. She was preceded in death by her brother Jack Shumate, and his wife Elsie. A retired teacher and professor of English, theatre and speech, she loved the plays of Ibsen, the songs of Sinatra, the jokes of Jackie Gleason, the words of Jesus, and her students of a lifetime. Public visitation services will be Friday, April 18, 5:30-8:30 PM, at CHAPEL OF THE CHIMES FUNERAL HOME, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward, CA, Burial services will be Saturday, April 19, 12:45 PM, at LONE TREE CEMETERY, 24591 Fairview Avenue, Hayward, CA.
