MARGARET JANE MERRIFIELD's Obituary
Margaret Jane Merrifield died October 3, 2002 in Moraga, California of Liver Cancer. “Janie” was born in St. Petersburg, Florida and prided herself as being a fourth generation Floridian. Raised and schooled in Florida, she departed that area for Washington D.C. where she worked for the government during World War II. After the war she returned to San Antonio, Texas for a position with a building and development company. It was there she met her future husband, Air Force Lt. Leslie R. Merrifield. Immediately married and stayed that way for the next 54 years of which 23 years in the service of the Air Force. After Air Force service they moved to California in 1970.Janie is survived by her husband of 54 years, a cousin Betty Jane Mueller, second cousins Richard and Barbara Reddig and Lisa Mueller, and her in-laws, Sharlene Adams of Sacramento, and Dale and Marylin Lucas and family.Janie served as an Air Force Officers wife and Club President in Japan, Taiwan and Korea. She founded cultural clubs there which permitted exchange of philosophy between American and Oriental cultures. This included her tireless work with local orphanages. Her philanthropic work in the United States involved the White Elephant Oakland Museum and Children’s Hospital. Janie was a member of the Bellevue Club and served in the capacity of Program Chairman and Second Vice President. She traveled all over the world, playing golf, operating Bridge Tournaments, supporting the San Francisco Opera and the Best of Broadway.The loves of her life were her husband, the Air Force, family, poetry, and people in general.
