Lucille Somerton's Obituary
LUCILLE M. SOMERTON Sept. 4, 1922 March 4, 2008 Lucille Mary Somerton died March 4 at Woodside Senior Residence in Castro Valley. She was 85. She was born Sept. 4, 1922, in Jamestown, N.Y., to Anna and Edgar Wright. She married James Steven Holliday in 1946 and moved to the Bay Area shortly thereafter. Lucy and Steve had two children, Judy Holliday, an I.T. consultant who lives in Castro Valley, and Tom Holliday, a newspaper reporter and copy editor who lives in Modesto. Lucy also is survived by her granddaughter, Mia Holliday, close friends Linda and Gage Gottermeyer and their children, Lindsy and Gage Gottermeyer, whom she considered to be her honorary grandchildren. Lucy was a homemaker for many years. She and Steve divorced in 1969 and Lucy moved to Florida before finally settling again in the Bay Area. She worked for Bay Area caterers and as a dietician for a local hospital. She married William Somerton in 1977. Bill preceded her in death in 1989. Bill’s daughter, Linda Sloan, and her family reside in Las Vegas. Lucy was a devoted wife and daughter, a loving mother and a loyal and caring friend. She was a strong, principled woman, independent and full of spunk. She was single-minded and determined, always someone to be admired and someone to be reckoned with. In her younger years she loved the big band music of the ’40s, dancing, watching Fred Astaire movies, listening to Frank Sinatra, and the company of friends. Later in life she liked spending time with her family, watching her children and grandchildren succeed, playing bridge, an occasional trip to the race track or casino, a good play or movie and listening to and watching ball games on television. Visitation will be 4:30 to 7:30 Sunday, March 9, at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd, in Hayward. A service will be held Monday, March 10, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 18550 Redwood Road, Castro Valley, with a reception following.
