Leola Lamons' Obituary
Celebrating the life of Leola Lamons
Leola Lamons was born November 6, 1935, in Fitzgerald, Georgia to the late Elijah and Roberta Black Wright. She was the fourth oldest of eight children with three surviving. She received Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and united with New Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church and was baptized. Later in life she joined Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland, California under the leadership of the late Rev. Herbert Guice where she sang in the choir. She received her education in Fitzgerald, Georgia and Pensacola, Florida night school where she met her friend Claudette with whom she would sing gospel music at several churches around town. She also met Army Sargent Robert J. Lamons at the same night school and married in 1955. To this union two children were born: Veronica and Jonathan.
In 1962, Robert, Leola and children moved to Oakland, California where she furthered her education and worked for Del Monte Cannery, Stokely Van Camp and California Automotive Sealing from where she retired in 2001. She enjoyed listening to and singing gospel music and attended gospel concerts at churches and concert halls all over the Bay Area along with her daughter, Veronica. She also enjoyed attending the Bill Picket Rodeo and seeing all those Black cowboys every July for several years until her stroke in 2018. She loved the Lord, her family, friends, and neighbors. She had such a sweet and generous spirit and would do all she could to help anyone in need. She was a great listener and if you had a problem, she would pray for you and give good, Godly advice and would tell you what you need to do about it. If you ask how she is doing she would say “I’m blessed”, no matter what she was going through, and she never complained. She had a laugh that everyone loved to hear. She leaves a legacy of love, generosity, faithfulness to God.
On Friday, December 9, 2022, Leola Lamons finished her journey, and the Lord called her home to Heaven. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Lamons, brothers Joe Lock and Charles Brown, Jr., sisters Cherry Pinder and Lucille Dunnom. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Veronica Lamons and Jonathan Lamons, her sister Alice Baldwin, her brothers George W. Brown and James Lee Brown, many nieces and nephews, family, and friends.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that day.”
II Timothy 4:7-8
