LAN TOM TOY's Obituary
Lan Tom Toy was born on March 10th, 1925 in Hong On Village in the Taishan County of China, as the only child of Harry Hay Toy and Fon Ha Lee. He graduated from Pui Ying Secondary School in Toisan.His grandfather, Sing Fai Toy, emigrated to America in 1886 and his father, Harry, in 1916. At the age of 19, Lan Tom went to Hong Kong. His new life was not easy in the beginning as he worked in restaurants and worked odd jobs in order to support himself.In 1947, Lan Tom briefly returned to Toisan to start a family and married Ngan Fong Louie, and their first son, Tony, was born in 1949. In 1951, he followed their footsteps and immigrated to America to start a restaurant with his father and during this time his family moved to Hong Kong. It was not until 1956 when Lan Tom was able to rejoin his family again, and he remained with them in Hong Kong, adding 3 more sons to their family; Andrew, Alfred and Anthony. In 1963, the same year Lan Tom’s mother passed, he moved to Peru for 3 years, prior to being able to return to America. After the naturalization of his father, Harry, in 1966, he permanently moved to the states.His second marriage to Ping Kam Chan resulted in his youngest son Peter, joined by a step-daughter name Angelica.He settled in California, living in Oakland, San Francisco, and then Union City for the last 14 years of his life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, often frequenting Chinatown and the nearby libraries.After recovering from a bout of pneumonia in 2009, he accepted Jesus Christ into his life as his personal savior. In March he celebrated his 90th birthday with his family, sons and grandchildren. In early May, he was diagnosed with lung cancer with liver metastasis. On June 3rd he went home to the Lord peacefully at the Summit Hospital in Oakland with family by his side.Lan Tom Toy is survived by a large family, including his 5 sons and 13 grandchildren: Karla, Megan, Kaitlyn, Ryan, Jeffery, Kyle, Daniel, Brian, Darrell, Clara, Jennifer, Stephanie, and Aiden.
