Kathryn Ruth Burt's Obituary
Kathryn Burt, better known to many as Kay or Mrs. Burt, passed away in her home with family by her side. Kay was born in Quincy Massachusetts and moved to Oakland as a very young girl. There, she met and married the love of her life Gordie (the boy next door) and they purchased their first home together in Newark where she remained and lived out her life. She is survived by 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Kay loved her home, her family and career with the Newark Unified School District in the childcare program. Kay loved working with the kids, doing fun crafty projects, which she was so good at, and going on field trips. Even when the children grew up and left childcare, many stayed in touch and she would often receive invitations to special events, such as a college graduation or even a wedding, so you know she was very beloved. She retired from Kennedy Elementary after 40 years! It’s no wonder everyone in Newark knows Mrs. Burt. Anytime we’d go to the store or restaurant, there was always someone yelling out “Hi Mrs. Burt!”
And those that knew her, also knew she was an avid Disneyland lover! She treated the family to several trips and we have so many wonderful memories of Christmas in the magical world of Disney! So, in grand style the family threw a Disneyland extravaganza party as a special memorial to her. Her entire backyard was converted to Main Street USA with popcorn and churro carts, appearances by Mickey & Minnie and Captain Jack Sparrow (her favorite) even took her for a spin on the dance floor. She might not have been there physically, but we know she was definitely there in spirit and loving it all!
Kay’s love Gordon left us all too soon, but she has always wanted to be buried with the love of her life. On February 13, the date of their wedding anniversary, the two will be together again for eternity. A memorial service will be held at Chapel of the Chimes Reflection Chapel from noon-1:30 with burial immediately following. All are welcome to come and share stories of the fabulous Mrs. Burt.
