John Charles Johnston's Obituary
John Charles Johnston, 90, of Newark California, passed away September 9, 2021 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
He was born in Klamath Falls Oregon, on March 26, 1931, son of the late John and Thelma Johnston. His death is preceded by his first wife Lucille Johnston of 28 years and second wife Kay Johnston of 29 years. His death is preceded by his stepson John Davidson and son Patrick Johnston.
He is survived by his daughter Amy husband (Fred) Budde, son Eric wife (Michelle) Johnston, Sister Robin Johnson, nephew Shaun Johnson and niece Jenifer Johnson. John is survived by his four beautiful granddaughters Ashley, Danielle, Alexis and Vanessa.
John graduated Albany High School in 1949. He went on to attend San Jose State from 1949 to 1950 until he enlisted in the Marine Corp from 1951 to 1954. After leaving the Marine Corp, he continued his college education at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo from 1955 to 1957. John graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Field Crop Production.
In 1957 John began his career with the Alameda County Agriculture Department and retired after 33 years of service in 1989 as the Assistant Ag Commissioner.
John had a great love for growing plants. He started the Fandango Christmas Tree Farm in 1968 along with his wife and small children and continued with this venture into the early 1990’s. John was a lifelong gardener. You could always find him in his yard watering, pruning and weeding his many plants and trees.
