James William Whitaker's Obituary
James William Whitaker, affectionately known as Papa, Pop, Grandpa and Uncle Jimmy, died at his home in Newark, California on November 29, 2011. Jim was born 90 years ago in Dutch Mills, Arkansas to parents Tom and Katherine Whitaker. His siblings include Marguerite, Nadine, Carl, Doris and Betty.Jim was an auditor for the US Army for over 30 years and he worked in many places throughout the United States and Asia. He met his lovely wife, Shizuko China, while in Okinawa, Japan after World War II. In 1960, they settled in Irving, Texas and later became longtime residents in Newark, California.Jim was known for his sharp wit and generosity. In the neighborhood, he was the local handyman and a car's open hood was an open invitation for his assistance. With friends and family, he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Jim did not mince words but this did not disguise his kind, caring nature. This good man had a brusk exterior but his sense of humor and twinkle in his eye touched us all.Precious memories of James William Whitaker will be cherished by those who survived him: His wife Shizuko, daughter Junko and husband Richard Hattori, son Charles Thomas and wife Elizabeth, son Stephen Alan and wife Tammy, older sister Nadine O'Neal and his many nieces and nephews, His grandchildren, Ross Hattori, Katherine (Kate) and Victoria (Tori) Whitaker.Jim received medical attention from the Shriners Hospital when he was growing up in Arkansas and their good work in making a difference in children's lives left and indelible imprint. The family would like to suggest in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in memory of James William Whitaker.Memorial services to celebrate the life of James William Whitaker will be held Friday, December 9th at 1:00 pm at the Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward (32992 Mission Blvd.). Servvices will be in the Reflection Chapel.
